Austria’s Thonhauser Receives Environmental Achievement Award for Water-Free Manufacturing Solution
MUNICH – NSF International and Trucost Plc. sponsored the Best Environmental Initiative award at the 2009 Beverage Innovation Awards in Munich, Germany, last month. Thonhauser GmbH, a developer of sustainable cleaning systems for the beverage industry, was recognized for their TM Smart Track dry lubrication solution – a pH-neutral, fully-synthetic chain lubricant, which creates a dry manufacturing environment that saves water.

The 2009 Beverage Innovations Awards took place during Drinktec, the world’s largest drink technology trade show, attracting over 340 entries from 40 countries in 24 different categories, including best new juice drink, best new alternative packaging and best overall concept. The awards recognize excellence and innovation in the international non-alcoholic drinks industry.
NSF International, a public health and safety organization that certifies products and writes standards for food, water and consumer goods, partnered with Trucost, a world-leading environmental data company, to sponsor the best environmental initiative award.
A panel of judges, comprised of representatives from industry, media and the scientific community, voted after reviewing entries in each category. The entry with the most votes per category won the award.
“Water conservation has become a very important issue, especially since water use and greenhouse gas emissions impact both the food and beverage sectors,” said Koen Bontinck, NSF Vice President of Sustainability Services. “Thonhauser’s system eliminates the need for water throughout the beverage manufacturing process. It is innovative systems, such as this, that will make the difference for beverage manufacturers in the future. With our partner Trucost, we are honored to recognize these innovative, green initiatives that Thonhauser and others have worked so hard to develop.”
Thonhauser’s TM Smart Track dry lubrication solution has been registered by NSF’s Nonfood Compounds Registration Program since 2005. NSF’s Nonfood Compounds Registration Program is a voluntary program for manufacturers of compounds used in and around food establishments (nonfood compounds), such as lubricants and disinfectants, and those used for pre-processing of food proprietary substances, such as fruit and vegetable washing agents. NSF Registration helps assure inspection officials and end users that nonfood compounds used in the manufacturing process meet appropriate food safety regulations.
Other award categories included best ethical initiative, best health initiative and best bottle in glass, a category in which NSF Certified Costella Natural Mineral Water was recognized. Costella Natural Mineral Water is certified by NSF International’s Beverage Quality/Bottled Water Certification Program, an independent certification program that includes product evaluations, as well as on-site audits of bottling facilities.
