Food Safety – Shopping and Storage

In addition to eating healthier, it’s important to practice good food shopping and storage habits to help make sure food doesn’t become contaminated or unsafe to eat.

Foods can easily become contaminated or unsafe to eat if they are mishandled. Because many organisms that cause foodborne illness — including bacteria, viruses and parasites – can’t be readily seen, smelled or tasted, it’s important to know how to properly shop for and handle food so that you can protect yourself and your family.

NSF’s food safety experts have the answers to your food safety concerns to help you avoid food poisoning when shopping for and storing food.
