NSF International’s Commitment to Protect Food and Water Supports World Accreditation Day 2012

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — NSF International supports World Accreditation Day 2012 (June 9th) to help raise awareness about the importance of accreditation and to support safer food and clean drinking water activities globally. NSF is a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Food and Water Safety and Indoor Environment that tests and certifies products against public health and safety standards to protect the global food and water supply. To honor the day, NSF hosted a tour of its laboratories for media.
Accreditations are important to an organization such as NSF International as they attest to the competency and impartiality of the services provided and compliance with established national and international standards for third-party certification.
“Consumers are increasingly concerned about food and water, and product certification builds confidence and helps consumers choose safer products,” said Stan Hazan, NSF International’s Director of Regulatory Affairs.
NSF Certification helps ensure that water and food products do not contain unsafe levels of contaminants or toxins. NSF International developed the first American national standard for foodservice equipment in 1944, and currently certifies more the 360,000 products including bottled water, home and consumer products, foodservice equipment, nutritional supplements, and seafood as well as organic and gluten-free products. NSF International’s Food Safety Division is a leading provider of certification to Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI)-benchmarked food safety standards, including SQF (Safe Quality Food) and BRC (British Retail Consortium).
In addition to NSF International’s focus on food, its Water Programs require extensive product testing and unannounced audits of production facilities to verify that water treatment products meet design, material and performance requirements. NSF led the development of the American national standards for all materials and products that treat or come in contact with drinking water such as plumbing components, water treatment chemicals and drinking water filters, as well as pool and spa equipment. In 1990, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) replaced its own drinking water product advisory program with NSF standards.
NSF’s recent contributions to food and water safety include:
- Developing low-lead drinking water standards
- Establishing an ISO-17025 accredited lab for food and water testing in China
- Publishing the first American national standard for water reuse systems
- Providing certification to global food safety standards and to water treatment and plumbing product regulations in 25 markets worldwide
- Creating a mobile app for consumers and athletes to identify dietary supplements and nutritional products that are free of banned substances and contaminants
- Developing new certifications for water bottle filters, microbiological water purification devices, and home kitchen products and appliances.
