Drinking water manufacturers seeking to import products into Brazil must have the INMETRO seal of conformity, and NSF offers testing and certification services for this approval

ANN ARBOR, Mich. and RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — NSF International, a global independent organization that writes public health standards and certifies products for food, water and consumer goods, has earned accreditation from Brazil’s National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Industrial Quality (INMETRO) to test and certify drinking water treatment products for the Brazilian marketplace.

Local producers in Brazil and manufacturers seeking to import their drinking water treatment products into Brazil are required to obtain the INMETRO seal of conformity for their products.  NSF is now accredited to provide this certification for drinking water products that have met the requirements of the Brazilian standards as part of a complete suite of NSF testing and certification services.

NSF’s authorization to issue the Brazilian INMETRO certification adds yet another country’s product approval to the new NSF Passport Program™ by which NSF can coordinate global market product approvals.   Other countries in which NSF can assist companies in obtaining drinking water product approvals include but are not limited to: the United Kingdom, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Malaysia.

NSF International’s Drinking Water Treatment Certification Program evaluates water treatment products including:  filters, reverse osmosis systems, water softeners, distillation systems and ultraviolet disinfection products.  NSF certifies that all design, material, and performance requirements are met and that the product works as claimed by the manufacturer via testing and auditing of the manufacturing location. Manufacturers can choose to work with NSF to certify product for either the NSF approval or the INMETRO approval or both approvals.

When selling products in a foreign market, manufacturers must be able to navigate that country’s regulatory requirements.  INMETRO’s accreditation complements NSF’s existing global laboratory and product certification accreditations and gives further recognition to the integrity of NSF International’s certification programs.

“Drinking water manufacturers who are currently certified by NSF International obtain an additional benefit by having a single point of contact to manage both the NSF and the INMETRO certifications, along with other international approvals,” said NSF Passport Program™ Manager Laura Moorman.
