Responsible Recycling

Contribute to sustainable farming through a certified recycling scheme.

Recycling certification schemes: why they matter

Recycling certification schemes like the Biosolids Assurance Scheme (BAS), Compost Certification Scheme (CCS), and Biofertiliser Certification Scheme (BCS) are essential for companies looking to convert waste materials into safe, marketable products. These certifications demonstrate a company’s commitment to environmental compliance and responsible waste management. Certification helps businesses meet UK regulatory standards (like those set by the Environment Agency and SEPA) while gaining End of Waste status, allowing their recycled products to be used in agriculture and other sectors. Certification not only assures compliance but also opens new market opportunities, positioning companies as environmentally responsible leaders.

Biosolids Assurance Scheme (BAS)

NSF is the only registered Certifying Body for the Biosolids Assurance Scheme, owned by Assured Biosolids Limited (ABL), a non-profit created by 11 UK Water and Sewerage Companies. Scheme members undergo annual audits to maintain BAS certification, with support from members based on the volume of biosolids recycled to agricultural land. By achieving BAS certification, companies ensure that biosolids are recycled safely, protecting both the food chain and consumers.

Compost Certification Scheme (CCS) – PAS 100

NSF is a registered Certifying Body for Renewable Energy Assurance Ltd (REAL), which owns and operates the UKAS-accredited Compost Certification Scheme (CCS). CCS certifies compost quality to PAS 100 standards, including the Compost Quality Protocol (CQP) and SEPA Position Statement. CCS-certified compost achieves End of Waste status, freeing it from waste restrictions and enabling its use as a safe agricultural product.

Benefits of CCS:

  • Increased marketability, as many local authorities require CCS-certified compost.
  • Customer assurance of compost safety and reliability.
  • CCS-certified compost can be applied directly to land, reducing operational costs.

Biofertiliser Certification Scheme (BCS) – PAS 110

NSF is also a registered Certifying Body for REAL’s Biofertiliser Certification Scheme (BCS), certifying anaerobic digestate to PAS 110 standards, Anaerobic Digestion Quality Protocol (ADQP), and BCS Scheme Rules. With UKAS accreditation, BCS certifies digestate to achieve End of Waste status, transforming it into a market-ready biofertilizer.

Benefits of BCS:

  • Meets requirements for local authority contracts.
  • Cost-effective: certified biofertilizer can be spread directly on land, bypassing storage needs.
  • Market recognition as safe, reliable, certified biofertilizer.
